Why Carob?
We wanted to create a treat that children get excited about — just without some of the things parents might rather they had less of.
Carob has a naturally rich, gently sweet flavour that makes it a brilliant alternative to cocoa. Unlike cocoa, carob is naturally caffeine-free and theobromine-free, while also naturally containing fiber.
That means we can make delicious little treats using simple, carefully chosen ingredients, without relying on cocoa or refined sugar.
Naturally caffeine-free • Cocoa-free • Theobromine-free • No refined sugar • Naturally contains fiber • Made with simple ingredients
Chocolate was never designed with little bodies in mind.
We’re so used to seeing chocolate marketed to children that we rarely stop to question what’s actually in it.
Cacao naturally contains caffeine - a stimulant that children have no nutritional need for. Leading paediatric guidance recommends that children avoid caffeine, with no established safe level for young children.
And caffeine isn’t the only stimulant naturally present in cacao. Chocolate also contains theobromine, a closely related compound. Together, these naturally occurring methylxanthines can have stimulant effects on the body and brain.
For a smaller, developing body, caffeine can interfere with sleep and may contribute to restlessness, nervousness and irritability. And when its effects wear off, children can feel tired or irritable too.
Then look at what is often added to children's chocolate: refined sugar, emulsifiers, flavourings and other highly processed ingredients.
It made us wonder:
Why are we taking a naturally caffeinated product, loading it with sugar, wrapping it in brightly coloured packaging and calling it a children's treat?
Chocolate may be familiar. But familiar doesn't automatically mean it was made with children in mind.
We wanted another option.
Carob gives us the rich, naturally sweet, chocolatey experience children love - without caffeine or theobromine. And Chocless Minis are made without refined sugar, because we believe a children's treat should be created for children from the very beginning.
Little treats. Better choices.
